Tokay Gecko

My Garden

A tokay gecko lives in my garden and I have the pleasure of hearing his call every so often. Fun facts about these geckos: they are desirable by the pet trade because of their beauty and size - they are quite a spectacular gecko; they are aggressive and can deliver a painful bite if handled; their name is onomatopoeic. The male tokay call is complex and quite loud. They start with a little warm-up sound which sounds like a dinosaur from Jurassic Park movies, then they launch into a call that gave them the name “tokay”. To Khmer it sounds like tok – kay but to Americans stationed in Southeast Asia during the war it sounded like “fuck you” – hence their name for the gecko: fuck you lizard
