The Actor Series

The Actors Series features portraits of famous actors in some of their most recognisable forms.

In Brad as Tyler Durden, the artist imagines the actor Brad Pitt in CryptoBrickie form as the character Tyler Durden from the cult 1999 movie, Fight Club. He is featured in this portrait in Tyler’s distinctive red leather jacket and matching oversized red sunglasses.

Based on the novel by the same name by writer Chuck Palahnuik, and directed by David Fincher, the movie did not do well at the box office, but slowly over time began to develop a cult following.

The movie is now studied in universities and there is a lot to debate about the many meanings within it, probably because the film did not diverge far from the original novel and the ideas within that. For the artist, the film resonated for Tyler’s elevation of minimalism… “The things you own end up owning you”… the themes of challenging the constructs of consumerism …“We're the by-products of a lifestyle obsession”… and for its existential undertones …“It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything”.

In the opinion of the artist, the movie is more relevant now than it was in the late 1990’s -

God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables, slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact.
